This afternoon while Mommy was doing the Big Climb for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the Columbia Center, Daddy and I saddled up the bike and the trailer to head to the Sunset Hill Community Club to take in Thistle Theatre’s production of Hanako and the Cherry Tree.
Also in attendance were pals Owen Moriarty and Campbell Smith with their respective adult representatives, or Lynn Burgess, Joe Moriarty and Cybil Burgess in addition to Mrs. Tia Smith.
Mr.Yama, a wealthy miser, discovers young Hanako in a cherry tree trying to pick cherries. He tells her the tree is his and is unwilling to share any of the tree’s bounty. Mr. Yama accidentally swallows a cherry pit and lo and behold, a tree grows out of his head! A bizarre series of events follow including an encounter with mythical Japanese creatures, a Tengu, an Oni and a serpent! Humor, danger and excitement fill this tall tale told with Bunraku, shadow and blacklight puppets.
While good, the afternoon’s highlight was heading to the Scoop at Walter’s for mango sorbet in a waffle cone in the company of my pal Campbell. She and I went to work on our cones while Tia and Daddy chatted it up.

Eventually Mommy arrived home from her climb and we had a pretty casual Sunday afternoon/evening. Kudos to Mommy for being Team Leader on completing the climb in only 20 minutes. Mommy is built Ford-tough and now you know why Daddy is an ass man!
